Awal Perang yang Meruntuhkan

Ali Riza Eti berpangkat kopral saat kesultanan Utsmaniyah berperang untuk terakhir kalinya sebelum runtuh. Ia seorang terpelajar, seorang dokter, asalnya dari sebuah desa kecil di Turki bagian Timur. Ia wajib militer saat berusia 27 tahun. Ketika itu ia telah menikah dan memiliki seorang anak. Sebagai dokter, masa depannya pastilah menjanjikan.

Tapi Eti memilih menyerahkan hidupnya demi melawan Rusia. Pada kisaran tahun 1800-an, Khilafah Utsmaniyah pernah terlibat peperangan dengan Rusia. Ayah Eti adalah veteran pada perang tersebut. Itulah yang menjadi alasan Eti ikut berperang melawan Rusia di dekat perbatasan Kaukasus, membalaskan dendam ayahnya.

Setiap inci wilayah Khilafah Utsmaniyah dilahirkan dari rahim peperangan. Setiap perbatasannya diperoleh lewat penaklukan dan konflik berabad-abad lamanya. Namun saat perang akbar tetas pada 1914–dikenal sebagi perang dunia I–Utsmaniyah benar-benar menghadapi sebuah perang semesta yang belum pernah dialaminya sepanjang karir pertempurannya.

Kata kakek Peter Parker “great power comes great responsibility”. Negara besar tentu memiliki perbatasan luas dan panjang. Pada perang tersebut Utsmaniyah menghadapi ancaman perang di semua perbatasan, secara serentak. Ada banyak titik rentan yang dapat diserang.

Laut merah menjadi palagan pertama pembukaan secara resmi perang semesta itu. Kapal perang sekutu (Inggris, Perancis) membombardir benteng pertahanan Utsmaniyah. Menghujani depot penyimpanan amunisi pasukan Utsmaniyah dengan tembakan. Wilayah pantai khilafah semakin rentan dan terbuka.

Serangan darat pertama kali dilancarkan oleh Rusia, mereka longmarch melintasi perbatasan Kaukasus ke Anatolia Timur di front tempat Eti ditugaskan. Rusia membawa hingga 80.000 serdadu.

Unit Eti mengembang misi mengadang laju pasukan tersebut. Mereka bertempur saat fajar. Di garis depan pertempuran gemuruh artileri terdengar keras. Hujan tembakan dari pasukan Rusia menyapu bersih kawan-kawan Eti yang ketakutan. Itu adalah hari pertama baginya mengikuti perang. Ia sangat ketakutan akan mati.

Setiap desing peluru yang terperangkap ke dalam telinganya membuatnya berkeringat dari gigi hingga kuku kakinya. Baku tembak terjadi sampai larut malam. Eti bisa tidur ketika pukul 03.00 dini hari. Musim hujan dan gugur membuat suasana begitu dingin. Eti dkk menggigil sampai pagi.

Baru beberapa jam tertidur, pagi-pagi sekali pertempuran sudah dimulai. Tidak ada yang sempat bikin teh dan makan biskuit. Artileri Rusia menghujani pasukan Turki dengan peluru. Tidak ada payung besi untuk menangkisnya.

Dalam buku hariannya, Eti menulis “Saat menulis paragraf ini, peluru shrapnel meledak di bukit di atas saya ‘ciiib!’ Para prajurit yang gugur bertebaran di sekelilingnya seperti pohon dedalu menangis.”

Bagi seorang dokter medis, pertempuran itu sangat sengit untuk merawat mereka yang terluka. Ia terpaksa ikut nimbrung mengangkat senjata dan baku temba. Eti berbekal perlengkapan medis dan dua kotak peluru. Dia menembakkan 83 butir peluru. Ia berhasil membunuh seorang letnan Rusia dan tiga tentara, sedangkan yang lainnya tidak kena sasaran.

Pada akhirnya, prajurit Turki berhasil mempertahankan posisi. Kapten pasukan kembali menyemangati Eti dkk. Ia berkeliling sambil membagikan amunisi. Sang kapten berteriak-teriak dengan gagah berani “Peluru mereka tidak akan menyentuh kita.” Namun saat itu juga, lehernya tiba-tiba tertembak. Ia jatuh tersungkur di depan pasukannya sendiri.

Eti dkk panik, kapten sudah tumbang. Siapa yang akan memegang komando?.

“Ayo kawan, kita berperang bukan demi sang kapten, tapi demi Allah,” perwira lain teriak. Pasukan Turki mengamuk, semua satu suara menyetor nyawa menyerbu garis pertahanan Rusia. Karena ngeri, Rusia memilih mundur jauh-jauh. Tepat jam sepuluh.

Chaos sudah reda. Eti melanjutkan bekerja sebagai medic. Setelah merawat semua rekan-rekannya yang terluka, ia iseng berjalan menuju posisi pertahanan Rusia. Ia mau melihat orang yang telah ditembaknya. Ia dapati letnan Rusia yang sudah dibunuhnya. Tidak ada simpati. Ia mengutuk mayatnya. Eti merampas revolver, tas, teropong dan pedangnya.

Infanteri pasukan Turki memberi perlawanan yang gigih. Hingga memaksa Rusia sedikit demi sedikit keluar dari wilayah Utsmani. Dalam peperangan, tidak peduli siapapun yang keluar sebagai pemenang, tetapi pasti babak belur juga. Menurut catatan Turki, pasukan Utsmaniyah menderita lebih dari 8.000 korban: hampir 2.000 orang mati dan 6.000 lebih terluka.

3.000 lebih pasukan hilang karena ditawan musuh dan hampir 3000 yang desertir.

Di pihak Rusia ada 1.000 yang mati, 4.000 yang terluka dan 1.000 tewas karena cuaca.

Walaupun menang, peperangan di front Eti cukup membuat Utsmaniyah kewalahan, mereka juga disibukan dengan serangan Inggris di Mesopotamia. Pelan-pelan setiap sudut perbatasan Utsmaniyah digerogoti oleh negara-negara sekutu.

Sebetulnya, runtuhan Khilafah Utsmaniyah bukan karena kalah dalam perang, tetapi syarat-syarat perjanjian damai yang sangat merugikan. Dalam banyak perjanjian, klausul yang membagi-bagi wilayah Utsmaniyah sangat mendominasi yang kemelutnya belum berakhir sampai sekarang. Apa yang terjadi di kawasan Timur Tengah saat ini adalah warisan dari perang semesta tersebut.
