Jauh ribuan tahun yang lalu didaratan Muna terdapat gambar pada sebuah dinding gua. Ada gambar seseorang yang menaiki seekor gajah, gambar matahari, gambar pohon kelapa, gambar binatang ternak seperti sapi, kuda, serta gambar layang-layang. Zaman prasejarah. Saat itu peradaban baca tulis tidak secanggih sekarang. Gambaran dan lukisan objek pada gua tersebut menunjukan gagasan dari seseorang. Bisa dikatakan sebagai model sosialisasi orang-orang purbakala. Tujuannya bisa saja beragam. Mungkin ia ingin menunjukan eksistensi, melampiaskan perasaan, atau bisa juga ia ingin mempengaruhi persepsi dan emosi orang lain. Dan produk visual seperti itu di zaman merebaknya medsos saat ini pun memiliki tujuan yang tidak jauh berbeda. Dan pola sosialisasi dengan metode visual (gambar) masih dipertahankan oleh orang-orang modern. Ya, kita-kita ini.

Era sekarang, orang-orang sejak balita telah dipertemukan dengan produk visual berupa foto. Tak hanya dalam lingkungan keluarga foto dimanfaatkan oleh beragam bidang akademik lainnya seperti biologi, mekanika, astronomi, medis dan sebagainya. Tanpa kita sadari foto telah memenuhi ruang keseharian kita, mulai dari bangun pagi, berangkat ke tempat kerja atau sekolah produk fotografi menjumpai kita tanpa diminta di jalanan. Bahkan hingga beranjak tidur pun foto selalu hadir melalui ponsel.

Teknologi berkembang, sosialisasi semakin mudah. Namun sayangnya dibalik kemudahan itu semua, hal-hal negatif juga turut menyertainya. Termasuk dalam bidang fotografi. Enteng sekali mengkonstruksi foto hoax, fakenews, foto-foto provokatif, propaganda dan manipulatif, seperti menjentikan jari layaknya super villain Thanos dalam serial Avenger. Dunia digital menawarkan kita petualangan imaji yang sangat luar biasa.

Ada data yang menunjukan bahwa ada lebih dari 350 juta foto yang terupload ke facebook setiap harinya. Dan lebih dari 60 juta foto ke instagram perhari. Sekarang ini, siapa yang tidak main facebook dan instagram. Jangankan anak-anak sekolah, mama-mama didapur pun sambil nyayur bisa sambil scrolling facebook page. Secara tak langsung jutaan foto itulah yang menjadi asupan sehari-hari kita. Yang tanpa disadari akan membentuk karakter kita masing-masing. Inci demi inci akan menggeser perspektif rasional kita jika tak dibarengi kecakapan visual.

Lantas, apa yang dirasa cukup penting untuk diketahui agar kita tidak tersesat dalam belantara visual?. Agar dapat mengkonstruksi makna foto secara kritis kita perlu terliterasi secara visual.

Terliterasi secara visual tidak hanya ahli dalam memotret atau menggunakan kamera, akan tetapi tahu bagaimana sebuah foto diciptakan. Tak berhenti sampai disitu, kemampuan membaca foto kemudian menginterpretasikannya ke lebih dari satu perspektif adalah salah satu kecakapan dalam literasi visual.

Foto itu polisemi. Sifat inilah yang sering membuat orang sala-sala dalam menerjemahkan foto. Karena polisemi, foto itu muatannya berlapis-lapis makna. Apalagi jika foto hadir tanpa caption. Imajinasi penikmat foto akan semakin liar. Maka interpretasinya perlu dikunci dengan caption.

Misalnya begini, ada gambar orang memancing di pinggir pantai. Maknanya bisa saja itu adalah seorang nelayan sedang memancing mencari nafkah, makna kedua, bisa saja itu orang yang cuma hobi memancing, seperti di acara TV Mancing Mania. Makna selanjutnya bisa saja itu orang hanya sekedar iseng saja memancing disitu. Nah, jika difoto tersebut ada keterangan yang menyertai bahwa orang tersebut adalah nelayan, maka pembaca kemudian akan berhenti berimajinasi. Menerima satu interpretasi.

Selain polisemi, masih ada beberapa aspek yang perlu dimengerti perihal membaca sebuah foto. Seperti aspek waktu, yaitu kapan foto itu diciptakan dan kapan foto itu dilihat, hal ini turut berkontribusi terhadap pembacaan foto. Ketika melihat foto konflik di Timur Tengah misalnya, kita akan keliru menerjemahkan jika tak memiliki wawasan yang memadai terhadap situasi politik disana. Disinilah aspek wawasan menjadi penting dalam pemaknaan foto. Sebenarnya masih banyak aspek lain yang perlu penjelasan lebih detail. Lensa foto akan membahasnya pada kesempatan berikutnya.

Untuk menyudahi ulasan ini, penulis membagikan sedikit tips untuk melatih cara berpikir kritis dalam melihat sebuah foto agar tak mudah tersesat dalam perangkap makna fotografi. Pertama, amati foto, lalu cari tahu isi fotonya (siapa subjeknya, kapan dan dimana kejadiannya, apa yang dilakukan, apa yang dirasakan, kira-kira sebelum dan sesudahnya apa yang terjadi). Kedua, renungkanlah pertanyaan apa yang terlintas di kepala anda saat melihat sebuah foto?. Selanjutnya, dimana atau bagaimana menemukan jawaban dari pertanyaan itu?.

Bayangkan, untuk menerjemahkan satu frame fotografi saja memerlukan proses berpikir dan research yang cukup rumit dan panjang. Jika dapat melakukannya maka secara visual kita telah terliterasi. Sehinga kita bisa fair dalam bersikap. Tidak mudah terhasut dan mengutuk ketika melihat citra sebuah tragedi dalam frame fotografi. Sebab dalam dunia visual, membaca foto tidak hanya mampu melihat, tapi juga memahami. (agr)
